But Can They Sing??

Week 3 Performances
Bai Ling + Carmine Gotti Angello – “Summer Nights”
The song seemed to last forever.  Or was the pain in my ears that made it seem that way?  The song is a classic for karaoke duets, but should not be tried by amateurs on TV.  Given that the song is extremely difficult to sing well and they’re not professionals, I’ll cut them some slack.  I wasn’t expecting them to be the next John Travolta and Olivia Newton John, but I hoped for them to be in tune.  First of all, even though Bai Ling is I think a woman and Carmine is trying to be a man…they should have switched parts.  Bai Ling as Danny and Carmine as Sandy, it just makes sense because she sings so low and he is still waiting for his balls to drop.  Must I remind everyone of last weeks’ episode where he squeaked out “When the peeemps, in the crib.”  He tried to sing for the whole song, but resorted to speaking whenever possible (good choice on his part).  She totally screwed up the sighing part.  The song was bearable, but only for one viewing.  The only way I would watch the performance again is to mock it.
I did like Carmine’s letterman jacket, but not Bai Ling’s slutty poodle skirt.  Doesn’t anyone talk her out of wearing these things?  Oh yea, I can’t forget the horrible sexually suggestive choreography.  Even the gay judge (Ant) was cringing at the bumping and grinding.  Enough of this train wreck…

Morgan Fairchild + Antonio Sabato Jr. – “I Had the Time of My Life”
Antonio started off well and I was really thinking that the song wasn’t going to suck.  Then along cam Morgan in a red dress that made her boobs look funny, and her part wasn’t that great.  They did some cute dancing, but I didn’t really feel any passion from them.  I guess I give them “A” for effort, and they give an admirable attempt to hit the same note together.  It wasn’t a terrible or awesome performance.  Their average performance might hurt them, because they’ll just be forgettable.

Michael Copon + Larry Holmes – “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”
The song started off cute, and the pairing of two men to sing a song originally sung by Elton John and Kiki Dee was definitely something to see.  They changed the song into Michael coming to advice to Larry about a girl problem.  Thus removing any homosexual innuendo from their pairing.  Michael was comfortable and appeared to want to make the song a cute duet with Larry, but the attraction to the swooning girls on the stage diverted his attention.  Michael left Larry out in the cold while he touched the audience’s hands and made them scream with joy.  Larry looked lost and stumbled for his words.  Towards the end of the song Michael did return, but never really looked at Larry.  The song would have been better if Michael and Larry interacted more.  The song is a DUET Michael; you don’t leave your partner hanging!

Poor Larry, he was the one booted from the show tonight.  I haven’t had a chance to thoroughly critique the solo performance’s but I did give them a quick listen.
Michael Copon Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name.”  He continues with his rock oriented song selection.  He does an ok job, but I still stand by the position that he should sing an R&B song.  Carmine Gotti Usher’s “U Remind Me.”  This is something to listen to!  If you thought that he couldn’t rap, well just listen to him sing.  Bai Ling Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”  She seems to think that screaming and taking off your clothes is singing.  Well she’s still here, so maybe that IS what the competition is about.
